La Yellow Cube Gallery à le plaisir de vous présenter l’exposition Promeneur, en hommage à Masumi Tokuoka, disparu en 2025. Pour la toute première fois, ces œuvres inédites, tout juste sorties de leur boîte et redécouvertes au moment de son décès, sont révélées au public grâce à la volonté de ses enfants de faire découvrir son univers au monde et de partager cet héritage artistique. Cette première exposition à la Yellow Cube Gallery se veut être une initiation, un premier aperçu du travail d'un photographe resté discret durant de nombreuses années.
Né à Kyoto en 1952, Masumi Tokuoka a mené une vie marquée par le voyage. De Londres à Paris, de Brunei à New York, il a développé au fil de ses voyages un regard photographique à la fois poétique, sensible et profondément personnel sur le monde qui l'entourait. Comme il l'écrivait lui-même :
"If there is such a thing, mine are introverted photographs. Very introverted. They are the pages of the diary of my mind."
Ce promeneur a arpenté le monde pour en saisir la beauté. Ses photographies oscillent entre la rigueur géométrique de l’architecture urbaine et des paysages suspendus, presque fantomatiques. Mais le voyage de Masumi Tokuoka est aussi intérieur. Ses images capturent des instants de vie, d’enfants et de travailleurs du monde. Au cœur de son œuvre se déploie également sa propre intimité, celle de la famille qu'il a construite aux côtés de son épouse et muse, l'artiste Martine Ray. Tout au long de son œuvre, il explore avec une infinie justesse les thèmes de la présence et de l’absence, entre contradiction et ambiguïté.
Cette exposition constitue ainsi une traversée visuelle en hommage à une âme voyageuse, dont les images révèlent une profonde intériorité et une ouverture au monde.

The Yellow Cube Gallery is pleased to present the exhibition Promeneur, a tribute to Masumi Tokuoka, who passed away in 2025. For the very first time, these previously unseen works—fresh out of their boxes and rediscovered upon his death—are being revealed to the public thanks to his children’s desire to share his artistic world with the world and to pass on this artistic legacy. This inaugural exhibition at the Yellow Cube Gallery is intended as an introduction, a first glimpse into the work of a photographer who remained out of the public eye for many years.
Born in Kyoto in 1952, Masumi Tokuoka led a life marked by travel. From London to Paris, from Brunei to New York, he developed—through his travels—a photographic vision that was at once poetic, sensitive, and deeply personal, capturing the world around him. As he himself wrote:
“If there is such a thing, mine are introverted photographs. Very introverted. They are the pages of the diary of my mind.”
This wanderer roamed the world to capture its beauty. His photographs oscillate between the geometric precision of urban architecture and suspended, almost ghostly landscapes. But Masumi Tokuoka’s journey is also an inner one. His images capture moments of life—of children and workers from around the world. At the heart of his work lies his own intimacy—that of the family he built alongside his wife and muse, the artist Martine Ray. Throughout his body of work, he explores the themes of presence and absence with infinite precision, navigating the realms of contradiction and ambiguity.
This exhibition thus serves as a visual journey paying tribute to a wandering soul, whose images reveal a profound inner world and an openness to the world.
